I recently discovered that my favorite beauty product is perfume. A little spritz or swipe of it in the morning can give me a boost of confidence as I go about my day. Some perfumes give me a headache, which is why I was particularly interested in trying Skylar.
About Skylar Scent Club
Skylar was created by a woman whose daughter had allergies to fragrances. All scents are vegan, cruelty-free, and hypoallergenic. The scents are mostly nature related with a few gourmand for variety.
Scent Club includes one “free” roller ball fragrance in the subscription price. You can choose their featured scent of the month or select from the provided list of alternates. The list each month offers a wide variety of fragrance notes so you’re sure to find one that you want to try.
As a member, you get additional roller ball scents for $20 each (regularly $30), discounted shipping, 20% off other orders, and access to new products before they are available to the public.
Example Scents
I have four Skylar scents in my collection:
- Nude Skin – Much stronger and sweeter than I was expecting. I prefer Rosie by Rose Jane if I want a subtle, nude skin scent.
- Super Bloom – More citrusy than the name implies, but it does smell good, clean, and fresh.
- Honeysuckle Dream – Honeysuckle can be a really overpowering scent and a little stinky, but their bias towards sweet scents really helps in this case.
- Sunkissed Dahlia – My favorite of the bunch! Fresh, floral, and juicy, it seems to be a fan favorite.
Pricing
The pricing is pretty simple. It’s $20/mo according to their website. Shipping is another $4.95.
Pros & Cons of Skylar Scent Club
What I Love
- Tons of scents to try
- Clean, hypoallergenic brand – no headaches for me!
- Quiz to help you narrow down what you want to try
- First access to new products
The Less Desirable
- Shipping is $4.95 unless you spend $50 (which means buying 2 additional rollers each month).
- Staying power varies, but some scents fade pretty quickly.
- One of my bottles was shipped with a loose cap so about 20% of it leaked out. I contacted the company and they did not respond. It’s been several weeks so I don’t think a response is coming.
- I was overcharged by $2 for one of the perfumes that was on sale for $18. It kept adjusting to $20 in my cart because rollers are $20 with the subscription.
Verdict
If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic fragrance subscription , this is one of the lowest cost options.
I have tried 4 different fragrances now and all of them have been good. They are all on the sweeter side, so I’d recommend getting their sampler set to make sure you like their general style before considering a subscription.
Due to the ordering issues I had and the lack of customer service, I’d recommend ordering the scents that appeal to you through Amazon, Ipsy, or other third party sites that are going to be reachable if you have problems with the order.
If you’re willing to risk it and want to be part of Skylar Scent Club, you can get $10 off if you sign up here.
Alternatives
Sucreabeille – This feisty brand has a huge scent library with creative (and sometimes spicy) names!. They offer a small bag of 3 samples for $15/mo or a larger bag with a full sized unreleased perfume, a few samples, and guest product for $66. It’s one of the priciest subscriptions we’ve tried, but a good value.
Margot Elena – This is next up on our list to try. At $60/quarter, it is another one of the pricier options but appears to be a pretty good value.
Wicked Good Co – Another vegan clean beauty brand with a large catalog. The box is $35/mo and comes with a perfume and a couple other goodies. The scents have been hit or miss for me, but overall it’s been a good experience.
I would recommend all of these over Skylar.
Not in to Commitment?
You can order rollers from Skylar without a subscription on Amazon (with free prime shipping) for the same price as on Skylar’s site. They have some fan favorites, like Salt Air, and some 2-packs of layering scents so you don’t have to give out your email address to yet another site.
Andromeda’s Moon is a great way to shop for vegan and cruelty-free designer dupes at a much lower price. Her catalog is massive!
There are also a ton of small fragrance businesses. I’ve also ordered from:
